Homeschooling

In Perspective

Home educating is not an end in itself; it is a means to an end. The end is the faithful discharge of our God-given responsibility to give our children a Christian upbringing and a Christian education, an education based on the conviction that Christianity is the truth. It is a matter of obedience to Biblical teaching and commands. Homeschooling using ACE with TeachAsia support system is a means to this end, but it is not the sum total of our Christian obedience.

We must remember that the Biblical commands and teaching regarding education are not the only Biblical commands and teaching. We are not excused the rest because we happen to homeschool with a Christian curriculum. It is basic and fundamental to giving our children a Christian education at home that the parents maintain their own Christian life to as high a standard as possible; personally, in the home, in the neighbourhood, at work and in the church. This also is included in our obedience to and our following of the Lord.

It is also important to remember that, as a home-educating family, you will need support and fellowship. You can gain great benefits from time spent with other homeschoolers (including those not in TEACH Asia), but such times are no substitute for the regular fellowship, worship and teaching ministries of a local church. We would strongly urge you to remain a committed part of the Christian community, of God’s family in the church you attend (Heb 10v24,25) As you may have found out, the most hostile criticism tends to come, not from non-Christians, but from fellow-believers. This ought not to drive us out of fellowship in our church. Indeed, the best answer to such criticism is the ongoing testimony of the life of your family, the proof of the pudding is in the eating and the proof of a Christian education at home is in the character and lives of the members of the family (parents and children). Homeschooling does not involve opting out of the Christian community or out of the human race!

Note for parents

It is important that the decision to home educate is a joint decision with both parents in agreement. Although mothers usually do the day-to-day schooling, the father should still have some involvement.
